What is Excise Tax?
Excise tax is an annual local town tax paid at the Town Hall where the owner of the vehicle resides. This tax is already included in your registration fees. Except for a few statutory exemptions, all vehicles registered in the State of Maine are subject to excise tax.

Boats

All boat registrations expire on December 31st of each year. To renew your boat registration, you will need to pay your boat excise tax (based on the length of the boat, the horsepower of the motor, and age of the boat), a state registration fee (based on the size of the motor) and a $1 agent fee.

To register a boat for the first time, you will need to bring in a bill of sale (the bill of sale should include the seller's name and address, the buyer's name and address, the serial number, a description of the boat (length, motor size and year) and the purchase price.) If there is no serial number or the boat is homemade, a state-issued serial number will be requested. Sales tax will be collected based on the purchase price on the bill of sale (if the current owner had the boat registered in another state, there will be no sales tax due at the time of registration). Temporary registration and sticker will be issued and will be valid for 90 days. The State of Maine will then send a permanent registration reflecting your boat number and stickers. If you purchased a boat previously owned by someone in the State of Maine, you will keep the same numbers that are already on the boat.
